Hellenic Authorities Boost Protection Following Demonstrations Against Israeli Passenger Liner

Greek authorities have dramatically enhanced safety arrangements at two key harbors in an attempt to keep protesters from reaching a passenger ship transporting Israeli tourists on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Latest Demonstrations Prompt Increased Security

The security reinforcement at Patras and Katakolo came after previous protests when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata earlier this week. Previously, travelers aboard the same vessel were blocked from going ashore and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after area inhabitants organized demonstrations on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"In spite of the truce, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," remarked Christina Lada who participated in the Kalamata rally. "Civilian, unarmed people are being killed."

Passenger Encounter and Popular Opinion

From the upper deck, travelers witnessed as crowds in Kalamata chanted: "You need the authorities, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who worked throughout summer arranging anti-war protests throughout Greece, stated: "Those Israelis who approve of the decisions of their administration aren't embraced here."

Geopolitical Context and Diplomatic Ties

A foreign policy analyst clarified: "Due to regional nearness and our historical connections with the Arab nations, the average Greek is more attuned to what is happening in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"Greece is in a challenging situation," he added. "The State of Israel is much more important for us as an ally than it is for most European states."

Commercial and Tourism Implications

Official data indicate that over 600,000 tourists from Israel visited Greece in 2024, with forecasts of even higher numbers this year. This substantial influx highlights the greatly strengthened connection between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Strategic Partnership and Regional Factors

For the Greek government, Israel constitutes not only a crucial counterweight to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also grants the additional advantage of better official channels to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to endanger its ties with Israel," remarked Filis. "But from a compassionate viewpoint we must be more accepting, more balanced, more committed to demonstrate the improper actions of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Protest Movement and International Response

The scale of the Greek protest movement has caught Israel off guard. In recent months, the state's external affairs office advised tourists to maintain a low profile, while domestic press characterized Athens as a "lost paradise" due to political graffiti emerging on buildings in the urban center.

The head official of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece voiced worry: "Of course we're anxious. The sort of rhetoric we're encountering can quickly turn into antisemitic."

Future Developments and Requests

Increasingly, protesters have focused on Athens' tight relationships with Israel. As many as 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to request the closure of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO base that following the start of conflict in Gaza has functioned as a key refuelling post for US military ships, military jets and vessels headed to Israel.

"Our efforts have produced results," declared Petros Constantinou. "Our main demand, at present, is to halt every partnership with Israel."
